Inventory Control System

Problem

Description

Client owned a number of food warehouses with no central inventory control system. Inventory of the pallets was taken by hand at the shipping dock and the cases of products were then place somewhere in the warehouse. There was no actual record of the final destination for each of the cases. Consequently there was a very high level of wasted time to determine the location of a given case of a given product. In addition product spoilage was very high.

Solution

First, bar scanners were place at the shipping docks and pallet information was stored in a central database. Second every warehouse employee was given a Handspring Visor equipped with a bar scanner card in addition to the standard infrared port.

The visors were running a costumed developed application that was able to scan the  five versions of UPC and two versions of EAN numbers; accepted final location information input typed by the user, and transmitted the information via infrared ports located within the warehouses back to the inventory database.
